Tiger Leaping Gorge(TLG),Lijiang,Yunnan Province,China 1994
TLG is known asHutiaoxia in Chinese, it is in the county of Zhongdian
not far from the border of Tibet. I started trekking from the hamlet of
Daju in the morning and reached Walnut Grove(Hetaoyuan) by nightfall.

Literally, Jinshajiang means "gold sand river", the river is full of rapids
too dangerous for whitewater rafting.

This picture was taken in front of Quanke Hotel(Quanke Lushe)
I spent a sleepless night at the hotel listening to the roaring
Jinsha River(Jinshajiang) down the gorge. The owner of the hotel is
Mr Xia Shanquan, a very helpful man who can speak fluent English.
When I was there Mr Xia was very worried because a Israeli girl who had
stayed there the previous day was missing on her trek to Qiaotou.
Earlier this year(1998) I read in a Malaysian paper that he married an Australian.

Jeff is a New Yorker, I met him at the Kunhu Hotel in Kunming.
After Lijiang and Dali, we parted ways.But in Dec 1996,
I met him again at the Chart Guest House on Khaosan Road in Bangkok. What a small world.
