Xin da jie(New Main street>, downtown Lijiang. Dec 1994 I was standing in front of the Red Sun Hotel thatI put me up for five days. There is a square with a huge Mao statute beside the hotel. With the Yulong Xueshan in the distance which was visible from my room, I must say I truly had a room with a view. The hotel is clearly appropritely named since Mao is regarded as the red sun of China. The renowned Mama Fu Cafe - remember its apple pie? - is on my right further up.
Dayan , the old town of Lijiang. Dec 1994 Ubiquitous canals with crystal-clear water ( from the snow mountain ), narrow alleys, swaying willows, Ming-dynasty architecture, Naxi costume¡ if you are tired of Dayan, you are tired of life. Dayan is also a UN World Heritage site.
Yufengsi (Yufeng Monastery) Dec 1996 Built in the Qing dynasty, the monastery is noted for a camellia Yunnanensis that bears more than 10,000 blooms (wan duo shancha in Chinese) a year. The camellia Yunnanensis is also the city flower of Kunming. In Springtime the Naxi Band(Naxi Guyue) used to perform here. But I missed that.
Wedding Procession 1994 Returning from Baisha(in the county of Lijiang) I came across this wedding procession. The girls leading the procession were carrying the household items of the bride and groom, a local custom, I believe.
Yunshanpin, Yulong Snow Mountains 1996 I took a cable car ride to the foothill of Yulong to get a closer look of the mighty mountain. The Yi people in the area are operating stalls renting their colourful garbs for your camera shot.
